Towers: Gassing the Oracle or Why Women are Generally Under Represented in the Artist’s Work (so that people stop asking)

Caitlin Cass calls herselves “The Great Moments in Western Civilization Cooperative.” The cooperative makes comics, drawings, performances and museums that folklorize the Western Canon. Forged in 1986, Great Moments in Western Civilization did not assume its formal name until 2007, but Cass has been curating great moments since birth. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College and an MFA in Visual Studies from the University at Buffalo, SUNY.

“Towers” is an ongoing series of drawings and prints in which all the accomplishments of Western History are paired down to an allegorical struggle of building rickety towers. Work from this series regularly appears in Caitlin’s monthly mail-order subscription comic, The Great Moments in Western Civilization Postal Constituent and has been featured in art shows across the country and around the world.
